Mesmo não tendo condições de estar presente na celebração dos 50 anos do
Center of Latin American Studies, da Universidade de Cambridge, faço-me presente por meio desta mensagem porque presente tenho estado nos últimos 40 anos. Peço para me incluírem no rol das relíquias históricas do CLAS. Ao qual me ligo por meio de relações intelectuais e afetivas. Há momentos em que não se pode nem se deve fazer a separação desses dois âmbitos da vida. Desde 1976, quando me tornei “visiting scholar” do CLAS, e desde 1993, quando fui eleito para Cátedra Simón Bolivar, tenho retornado a Cambridge com frequência, onde tenho realizado uma parte importante de minha obra de sociólogo (e também de fotógrafo!). É aquela coisa de que, com a idade e o passar do tempo, as pernas e o coração escolhem por si mesmos os rumos e o destinos. Saio por aí e me vejo chegando a Sidgwick Site. Muitas vezes nem paro em Londres, pois já estou condicionado: venho de Heathrow diretamente para West Road.

Devo a David Brading e a David Lehmann o convite para agregar-me ao CLAS em 1976 e a eles devo o empenho para que me tornasse Simon Bolivar Professor em 1993-94. Devo-lhes, também, o acolhimento que eles e suas famílias deram a mim e minha família nessas duas ocasiões e em várias outras em que aqui tenho estado. Tenho o mesmo débito com Maria Lúcia Pallares-Burke e Peter Burke, cuja casa tem sido verdadeiro College brasileiro em Cambridge, lugar de encontro e de afeições, de debate e de reflexão. Não me esqueço de Ana Grey, de Clare Hariri e de Julie Coimbra, que foram e tem sido o corpo diplomático do CLAS e o seu competente e incansável serviço de pronto-socorro dos peregrinos que aqui chegam.

Tenho sido fraternal e generosamente acolhido em meu College, o Trinity Hall. E até mesmo, ainda recentemente, convocado para participar de projetos como o do livro coletivo  organizado em meu College por Sir Roy Calne e William O’Reilly (eds), Scepticism: Hero and Villain, publicado pela Nova Science Publishers de New York, em 2012, e lançado na Heffers, em Cambridge em 2013, com o capítulo “Between blind justice and skeptical justice: Lynching in Brazil”.

O CLAS tem sido, ao longo do meio século que se cumpre agora, o território do encontro entre intelectuais do Reino Unido e da América Latina, o lugar do aprendizado recíproco de pesquisadores de um lado e de outro do Atlântico. Um lugar de criação e descoberta. Espero estar aqui no encontro do cententário, pois a história do CLAS me dá enormes razões para ser otimista. Esperem por mim!

English translation:

Although I cannot be present at this celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Centre of Latin American Studies, I would like to make myself present via this message, just as indeed I have been present there for the last forty years. I would like to ask you, therefore, to include me in the list of the Centre’s historical relics. My connections with the Centre have been both intellectual and those of friendship. There are moments at which we cannot and should not separate these two aspects of life. Since 1976, when I was Visiting Scholar at CLAS, and since 1993, when I was elected to the Simón Bolívar Chair, I have often come back to Cambridge, where I undertook a good amount of my work as a sociologist (and also as a photographer). With the passing of time and with age, it seems that the legs and the heart choose their own directions and destinies. When I walk around Cambridge, I find myself arriving at the Sidgwick Site. Often, I do not even stop in London, as I am conditioned to travel straight from Heathrow to West Road.

I owe to David Brading and to David Lehmann the invitation to join the Centre in 1976 and also for supporting my nomination to the Simón Bolívar Chair. I am also grateful to them for the warm welcome that they and their families gave to me and my family on these two occasions and at the many other times I have been there. I feel equally indebted to Maria Lucia Pallares-Burke and Peter Burke, whose house has been like a real Brazilian College in Cambridge, a place of gathering and of affection, of debate and reflection. I cannot forget Anna Grey, Clare Hariri and Julie Coimbra, who were the Centre’s diplomatic corps, and their efficient and tireless first aid service for all the pilgrims that arrive there.

I have also been given a generous and friendly welcome in my college, Trinity Hall. Even recently I have been invited to take part in projects there, such as a volume edited by Sir Roy Calne and William O’Reilly, with a chapter “Between Blind Justice and sceptical justice: Lynching in Brazil” (Scepticism: Hero and Villain, New York: Nova Science Publishers, 2012; launched in Heffers, in Trinity Street, in 2013).

The Centre of Latin American Studies has been for this half-century a meeting-place for intellectuals from the United Kingdom and Latin America, a place for mutual learning on the part of researchers from both sides of the Atlantic. A place of creativity and discovery. I hope to be at the celebration of the Centre’s centenary, since the history of CLAS gives me great reasons to be optimistic. I’ll see you there!
