Professor Juan Fernando Calderón Gutiérrez
We are delighted to be welcoming Professor Juan Fernando Calderón Gutiérrez to Cambridge to take up the Simón Bolívar Visiting Chair for 2017-18. A sociologist hailing originally from Bolivia, Prof Calderón is currently Director of Research at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He also teaches on postgraduate programmes at the Universidad de Córdoba and FLACSO, Argentina.
Previously, he has taught at several US universities (Austin, Chicago, Berkeley, and Cornell), as well as the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in Barcelona (Spain), the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA) in La Paz (Bolivia) and universities in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Chile.
He has been appointed as Executive Secretary of Latin American Social Science Council (CLACSO), Social Policy Advisor at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and Special Advisor on Human Development and Governance for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). He has also participated as Coordinator and Senior Advisor in over ten Human Development Reports for several countries of Latin America, Europe and Africa, and at sub-regional and global levels.
Prof Calderón is the author of 22 books on democracy, culture and development. Currently, his research interests include innovation, development and multiculturalism in Latin America. Among other projects, he is co-writing with Manuel Castells a sociological analysis of political, cultural and ecological changes in the region.
