Race & Ethnicity from the Latin American experience
Professor Edward Telles, UCSB
Friday 21 October 2016, 3pm-6.30pm
Alison Richard Building, SG1, 7 West Road, Cambridge, CB3 9DT
Prof Edward Telles (University of California) presented the key findings of his major project on ethnicity and race in Latin America (PERLA), in this year’s Salvador Allende lecture, co-hosted by the Centre of Latin American Studies and the Department of Sociology and supported by a generous donation. He was joined by four other scholars working on the politics and sociology of race: Patrick Simon, Humeira Iqtidar, Antônio Sérgio Guimarães and Mónica Moreno Figueroa. They gave short and lively responses to his work, drawing out its importance for studies of racism and inequality in Latin America as well as its more polemical aspects. As always, it was great to see so many staff and students there from different departments across the university, engaging in debate and enjoying a glass of wine or two afterwards with the speakers.
