Race and Indigeneity in Latin America

Module convenor: Dr Charles Pigott

This module combines anthropological and sociological perspectives to explore concepts and practices related to race and indigeneity in Latin America. Seminars will be led by Charles Pigott, Françoise Barbira-Freedman, Laurie Denyer Willis, Mónica Moreno Figueroa, María Moreno Parra, Gisela Carlos Fregoso and Alanna Cant, drawing on their research expertise in the field. Topics will include mestizaje, whiteness and beauty, race and masculinity, healthcare, education, indigenous revivals and political movements, and ethnicity as performance, and will examine cases from a number of countries and regions across urban and rural Latin America.
