I am broadly interested in radical political economy, political theory, historical materialism and Latin American politics. At Cambridge, I am researching the relationship between neoliberalism, populism and authoritarianism in 1990s Peru. I am particularly interested in the ways in which neoliberalism can become, or be made to be, a truly popular/populist project from below. Put differently, I hope to understand how Fujimorismo (i.e. Peruvian neoliberalism) came to be embraced by some sections of Peru’s subaltern classes.
Biography
I was born and raised in Lima, Peru. My paternal family is from Okinawa and my maternal family is from the central Andes. I have a BA in Economics, Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick and an MSc in Politics Research from the University of Oxford. My PhD is funded by the Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholars Programme.
