Simón Bolívar Professor 2014/15

Diamela Eltit

The Centre of Latin American Studies is delighted to have hosted Diamela Eltit in Cambridge as our Visiting Simón Bolívar Professor during 2014/15.

An award-winning novelist, short story writer, essayist and critic, Eltit published her first texts during the dictatorship in Chile (1973-1990) while becoming involved in visual arts and diverse modes of performance as a founding member of the renowned CADA group. Her novels, some highly experimental and others more accessible in narrative style, always bring provocative perspectives to bear on issues such as dictatorship, disappearance, and state terror; poverty, neoliberal capitalism, and marginalization; gender and sexuality; national identity, indigenous cultures, and racism. Eltit is also an important critic in the field of Latin American literature and has lectured at many institutions in the US and Latin America.
