Centre of Latin American Studies

The Centre of Latin American Studies expresses its deepest condolences to the victims of, and our solidarity with the survivors of the Brumadinho dam disaster. The disaster has claimed the lives of several dozen people and many more are still missing. We commend the work of Firefighters and the Red Cross, along with all other organisations and the local community that have joined the search for survivors and begin to offer support to those affected by this terrible disaster. We hope that the government carries out a thorough investigation, and that those found responsible for the failure of the dam are punished according to the law. This dreadful event urges an exhaustive investigation of mining practices, in Brazil as well as in several other countries, where enormous risks are being taken that endanger both people and the environment, and where abuses are being committed against vulnerable rural populations.
